Tokyo: green city
True, Tokyo is not famous for being a green city; it is rather described as a “concrete jungle”. The lack of green spaces is a problem in the metropolitan area. If we compare the percentage of green area in Tokyo (inside the 23 wards area) with a city in Europe the difference is enormous. We can get also the same result if we consider the ratio of m2 of parks per person (data source: Japan Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and tourism). However the quality of the parks in the city is incredible high. Parks in Tokyo are not just beautiful but they are very diverse and they can be considered open-air museums. In addition I think Japanese people try to “cover the gap” by having a lot of plants in their apartments or in front of their houses even if the space is ridiculously small.
In this Project I would like to describe not just the parks in Tokyo, the diversity and the different role they cover in the city, but also how Japanese people interact and deal with the green.
